Grand Prismatic Spring

Nature You Pretty

This spring is found in the Yellow Stone National Park. It is about 90 meters wide and 50 meters deep. It is the largest spring in Yellow Stone and the third largest in the world. More info below.

The spring expels about 560 gallons of water a minute and the center of the spring is extremely hot but it still contains life. It contains chemotrophic which are organisms that use chemicals as a source of energy. These organisms are bacteria that give the spring its amazing colors. There are also cyanobacteria  which are photosynthesizing bacteria that live on the edge of the spring. They give it the brown, red orange, green, and yellow colors. The spring was first discovered in 1871 by the Hayden Expedition.
