Cone Snail

Yes snail week is over. But before we go, want poison in a cone?

These guys have such complex venom that there is currently no developed anti-venom against this snail's poison. There are over 500 species and their main hunting technique is paralyzing their victims and swallowing them whole. Well at least these guys are in the ocean and not in your back yard. More info below.

Scientist are still breaking apart this complex poison but they have been able to isolate a few chemicals that act as pain killers. They believe the chemicals are several hundred times stronger than morphine and without the the addicting side-effects. These snails have killed several people and the only currents treatment is to keep the patients alive until the poison has left. They are found around the world in warm tropical oceans. Their shells are also popular for shell collectors.
