Socotra Island

Hard to believe this amazing Island is on Earth

The Socotra Island is a an extremely bio-diverse landscape. It's much like the Galapagos Islands because of its geographical isolation. There is almost alien-like plant life (about 300 are endemic, meaining found nowhere else on Earth), several hundred rare animal species (many of which are endemic as well), and a landscape of desert and beautiful vegetation. More info below.

The island is approximately 125 kms long by 45 kms wide and covers a total area of 3665 sq kms.

The climate is very hot, dry, and windy. As a result of the harsh climate most of the plant life has developed drought resistance. Areas higher up in the mountains (as high as 1525 meters high) or sheltered valleys are host to the more luxuriant vegetation.

Dorstenia gigas are part of the fig tree family and digs their roots right into bare rock.

The Dragon's Blood Tree is very unique looking, with a strong dark red resin whose uses vary from treating tumors to dye for red wool. It has many myths surrounding and is used for magical rituals.

The island is an amazing natural relic with a lot to offer.
