Assassin Bug

Great... as if we needed more blood suckers...

This little bug roams around very sneaky and quiet-like, looking for any source of blood. That includes you! He uses his large syringe like mouth appendage to suck blood from his victims. (There are thousands of assassin bug species and one video refers to them as Wheel Bugs) More info below.

(those are ants on their backs)

"Assassin bug" refers to any of about 4000 species of insects in the bug order Heteroptera. Notable characteristics of different assassin bugs include:
Stenolemus bituberus: plucks strands of spider web to mimic trapped prey, then attacks
Ptilocerus ochraceus: has abdomen hair that attracts ants, the paralyzes with a glandular secretion
Platumerus: able to "spit" saliva up to one foot away. The average assassin bug is about 0.4-1 inch in length.

They are typically found under stones and bark. After the bug sucks all the digested innards out of its prey it sometimes uses the empty shells as armor.  This is commonly done with ants.
