Is it a crater?
The true cause of this geographical phenomenon is not completely understood but these are the hypothesis out there. After its initial discovery the giant circular rock formation was thought to be a giant impact crater with a diameter of almost 30 miles. It is now believed to be more on the lines of a volcano that fell in on itself essentially. Erosion is the main architect for this formation. It is responsible for the three slopping rings in the structure and the overall shape which is actually a thin dome. The structure is so large that astronauts use it as a land mark.
