Pistol Shrimp

No that name is not an exaggeration.

The videos below show a recently uncommon shrimp called Pistol Shrimp. They get their name from their large claw that they use to stun other small shrimp or fish with. They like warm waters found mainly in the Meditation but a handful have been found near British coasts. These shrimp share a symbiotic relationship with Goby fish which is the fish also shown below. For more info read below videos.

There are about 600 species of Pistol Shrimp and they grow to be about 2 centimeters. The shrimp uses its muscle to  cock and close its claw releasing a stream of water reaching about 60mph. Several bubbles form behind the stream and as they implode a small flash of light is created and the interior temperature of the bubble reaches 5000 Kelvin.  That's about as hot as the sun's surface temperature! The snapping sound reaches 218 decibels ( ratio of physical quantity related to the reference level implied ). Our ear drums rupture at 150. There are over 2000 species of Goby Fish and they can reach up to a 1ft in length but are usually much smaller. The Goby fish gets protection from the shrimp, a home to sleep in and a place to hatch their eggs and in return the shrimp gets a good pair of eyes to protect against predators.
