It's just a really cool looking jellyfish...and it glows!
The atolla jellyfish’s most
remarkable attribute is its stunning deep red glow. With diameter ranging
just from between 15-200 millimeters, it is not inherently well equipped to
survive the dangers of the sea. However, it uses a remarkable “burglar
alarm system” to fend off potential predators. When in danger, the atolla
jellyfish will flash rapidly. This attracts larger predators, who will
likely be more interested in the jellyfish’s attacker than the jellyfish
itself. The atolla jellyfish’s diet consists mostly of crustaceans.
It is found in many parts of the world, including the Gulf of Mexico, as
well as the northern Pacific and Atlantic.
