The Jiuzhaigou Valley is a national park located in the northern part of Sichuan China. It is home to multi-leveled waterfalls, crystal clear lakes, snow capped peaks, endangered species (like the giant panda) and Tibetan villages.  Here are some videos showing off the landscape. More info below.

Unique qualities:
  • The name means "Valley of Nine Villages", derived from the nine Tibetan villages that still live in the park
  • Home to coniferous forests, color filled lakes, waterfalls, and limestone terraces
  • Mirror Lake is a narrow lake that goes for about 1,000 meters long with crystal clear reflections throughout its waters.
  • Peacock River is about 310 meters in length and is outlined with flowers and trees on both of its sides. When Autumn comes and the colorful leaves cover the river it looks like a peacock spreading its feathers from above.
  • Five Flower Lake is filled with calcium carbonate and colorful hydrophytes (plants that grow only in or on water). This creates many different colors within the lake and is why the local people call it the "Five Flower Lake".
  • Leshan Giant Budha was first built in the Tang Dynasty and the project was initiated by Hai Tong.
Inhabitants:
  • Giant Pandas have very inefficient digestive tracks (most of the their food is converted into waste) and therefore must consume around 30 pounds of bamboo each day to get its daily nutrition.
  • Takins are very large goat antileops and herds can reach up to 300 in high mountain sloaps.
  • Golden Monkeys are endemic to western-central China and highly social animals which can reach up to bands of 600 but in the winter they average 20-30.
  • Chinese Grouse are the smallest grouses in the world and are primarily monogamous.
  • These are just a few. There are several hundred different species of animals and plants in the area.
Location/Climate:
  • According to Tibetan legend a mountain god named Dago made a mirror out wind and cloud and gave it to the goddess Semo.  Evil spirits troubled Semo however and she broke the mirror into 108 pieces. These pieces fell down to earth (in Jiuzhaigou) and made 108 colorful lakes.
