Nature Can Do That?: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

The Floating Mountains of China

No I'm sorry they are not actually floating but the thick cloud of fog that covers these mountains gives off this appearance. The director and production designers of Avatar said they drew inspiration from these mountains for the film's "Avatar Hallelujah Mountains" which were floating clumps of rock. This landscape is really amazing and I would definitely visit this park if I went on world touring spree. More info below.

The park is located about 19 miles from Zhangjiajie city in the Hunan Province. Here is a picture of the province in China.

The park has an area of about 150 square miles. It was first set up in 1982 and is the first authorized national forest park in China. The climate is very humid and hot with cool winters. The average temperature in the area is 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit).

There are several tourist sites like Huangshi Village and Jinbian Stream (Golden Whip Stream) in the park.

Huangshi Village

This village is located at a 1300 meter elevation. It is the most commonly visited sightseeing attraction of the park. As seen by the middle picture above it is located right on a peak which sets the stage for beautiful sun rises. Tourist can hike up to the peak or take a cable car ride (seen in the picture to the right) to the top.
