This fig tree engulfs its tree victim until the tree has rotten away. It then becomes a standing tree made of vines with a hollow center. It's truly amazing and terrifying at the same time. Here's a video explaining the tree. More info below.
Love this guy
The strangler fig belongs to the family Moraceae (Ficus aurea). There are about 1,000 species of Fiscus which can be found around the world in rainforest ecosystems, tropics, and islands. Although this tree takes life in order to live it is also considered a keystone species for its environment. Its hollow center provides an easily claimable and safe home for thousands of small animals like rodents, amphibians, reptiles, monkeys, birds, and bats. Not only is it an enormous shelter which can reach up to 45 meters tall but it also produces an abundance of small fig fruit several times a year. The seeds of these fruits spread throughout their environments through animal dung continuing the tree's life cycle. Some animals' diets contain 70% of the tree's fruit. It is also avoided by loggers because its wood is so unimaginable increasing the tree's survivability.

Pretty amazing, but I don't like them. They look ugly and kill the real trees. But I guess if you like to eat figs, they're cool.
ReplyDeleteYeah kinda sucks for the trees, but at least they provide a lot of things like shelter and food for other animals in the jungle
