Scaly Foot Gastropod

 No that's not a statue.

That's right, that rock looking like creature is actually a marine snail. These crazy looking snails live near "black smokers" (hydro-thermal vents). Temperatures down there can reach as high as 400 degrees Celsius! They use iron-sulfides retrieved from the mineral rich smoke given off by the vents to make their tough shells. They are the first animals to do this. Videos for this rare creature are unavailable but here are some cool pictures and more info below.

The snail was first found somewhere between 1999 and 2003 (multiple dates from multiple sources).  The snail's main predators are crabs. The crab will just hold onto the snail for hours or days if it has to and slowly apply enough pressure to crush the shell. The shell has a calcified inner layer, an organic middle layer, and a hard outer iron-sulfide embedded layer. This combination of layering can often disperse enough of the pressure applied by the crab to live. The snail's unique armor is being researched by the US military in order to make better body armor for soldiers.  Scientists are trying to figure out how its unique shell works. Recently a new white scaly foot gastropod has been found. This one shares the unique scales seen on both snails but it doesn't use the iron-sulfide for its shell. Its uncertain if both snails are the same species but research is being done on both snails.

  1. The scaly foot gastropod is amazing. What a wonderful addition to "Nature Can Do That?" Snail Week.
