<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">First up is the fangtooth. While it is the smaller of the two fish (reaching about 7 in.) it's teeth are the largest of any fish proportional to its body size. The fangtooth's teeth are so large it has two sockets near its brain where its two largest teeth (located on the bottom jaw) reside when its mouth is semi closed. Because the fish's face is very grumpy and rugged looking it has earned the nickname "ogrefish".</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Scary fish</b></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The viper fish is just as formidable as the fangtooth and while it may have smaller teeth proportionally it has a larger body reaching anywhere from 12-24 inches. The viper is also highly aggressive and not only charges at its prey but lures it in with an organ on the tip of its <a href="http://www.seasky.org/deep-sea/assets/images/viperfish-full-se48.jpg">dorsal fin</a> that gives off light (called a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photophore">photophor</a>). It has several more smaller photophor's along side the fish's body which may also attract prey or communicate with rivals and mates. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/YdMjfkgk1Lg" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Alright time for the gross looking goblin shark. The goblin shark can reach around 13 feet long and has a mouth filled with nail like teeth. It is has a very long and flat snout which is able to sense small electrical fields given off by nearby prey. It eats mostly bottom dwelling and mid ocean animals. Because of its sluggish nature scientists believe it is an ambush predator. They believe it drifts motionless towards prey (undetectable) and when it is close enough it rapidly lunges with its jaws catching its prey in a flash. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Alright that's it guys. Hope you enjoyed the special and hope you had a few goose pumps. I sure did. Next week is going to be to normal again but like any good movie there has to be a little treat after the credits. So show up at 10:00 pm and I might have one. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">This fish doesn't mess around. The Stargazer is an ambush predator with a face only a mother could love. Luckily it hunts with its face mostly covered under sand waiting for prey to swim by. It keeps its two bulging eyes out always looking for its next victim. When a nearby fish is spotted it dashes from the sand with a snake like speed and swallows its victim whole. The Stargazer's disturbing face and merciless hunting tactics make it another great candidate for our Halloween Special. Here are some videos. More info below...but beware of watching eyes.</span><br />

<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Key Characteristics:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">As you may have already guessed, the Stargazer fish gets its name because of its stationary face and eye position looking up towards the ocean's surface.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">There are about 50 different species of stargazer</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The average fish size varies from 18-25 cm (7-10 in.) but some giant species can reach as long as 90 cm (35 in.)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">They use their side fins as shovels to bury quickly into the ocean's floor.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Stargazers also have poisonous spines behind their gill covers </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">A small worm like appendage hangs from the the bottom of the stargazer's jaw. When needed they will use this appendage as a lure to attract prey.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Stargazers lay their eggs during the spring and summer at the bottom of the sea floor. The eggs are transparent and hard to spot and will float to the ocean's surface and hatch. </span><span style="font-size: large;">They survive by eating the egg's yoke sac and when they reach from 12 to 15 millimeters they are able to swim to the bottom of the ocean's floor and mature.</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Diet:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Small fish, crabs, squid, and anything small enough to eat</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Habitat/Geography:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Bottom of ocean floor in mud or sand </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Mediterranean sea and Atlantic Ocean</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Fun Fact: </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The Stargazer has an electrical organ located on its head behind its eyes which allows it to give off a small electrical pulse to confuse and stun its predators.</span></li>

<span style="font-size: large;">Like dinosaurs and eels? Well I've got the shark for you. The frilled shark is some prehistoric combination of fish and eel. It is extremely rare because it is found in water depths of up to 1,570 meters. By combining his dark environment, odd body form, and creepy smile we get a perfect candidate for our Halloween Special. Enjoy the videos. More info below... if you dare! </span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Scientific Name: </b><i>Chlamydoselachus anguineus</i></span></div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Key Characteristics:</span></b><br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The name "<i>anguineus</i>" is Latin for "snakelike" which makes a lot of sense because of the eel or snake like body of the shark.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The sharks teeth are small but they are <a href="http://media3.s-nbcnews.com/j/MSNBC/Components/Photo/_new/090528-Science-Toothy%20shark.grid-6x2.jpg">three-pronged</a> and because of the multiple rows in its mouth there are about 300 teeth total.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The frilled shark is very grey or dark brown and has six gills. Very unusual because most sharks have 5 gills. Its dorsal fin (<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=dorsal+fin&oq=dorsal+fin&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.1438j0j7&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8#es_sm=122&espv=210&q=dorsal+fin+definition&spell=1">def.</a>) is also unusual because of how small and far back it is.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">It is unclear yet of how the shark feeds but because of its snake like body form it is suggested that it actually bends it's back and then lunges at its prey. Then using its inward pointing teeth and its the ability to open its jaws extremely wide (similar to a snakes) it is able to swallow prey larger than half of its body length. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Female sharks have a litter range from 2-12.</span></li>
</ul>

<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestation_period">gestation period</a> for a female frilled shark may be as long as three and a half years, making it the longest of any <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertebrate">vertebrate</a>. </span></li>

<span style="font-size: large;">It's hard to even think of this monster of a plant as a flower. More like a small tree but The Titan Arum is certainly a flower with a very strong perfume to go along with its size. The perfume smells similar to a rotting carcass and is sometimes referred to as the "corpse lily". It may not smell good but it sure is pretty. Here are some videos. More info below. </span></div>

<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The Titan Arum was first discovered by Odoardo Beccari in <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbnid=VD0TpLz1mk9gIM:&imgrefurl=http://www.worldvision.com.au/issues/emergencies/PastEmergencies/IndonesiaEarthquake/World_Vision_sends_relief_team_gears_up_for_.aspx&docid=04sKU0ffikkVTM&imgurl=http://www.worldvision.com.au/Libraries/Sumatra_earthquake/KeyMap_sumatra_1200x800.jpg&w=1200&h=800&ei=UrhLUq2qIOT9igLsnYGQBw&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:20,s:0,i:159&iact=rc&page=2&tbnh=129&tbnw=175&start=20&ndsp=26&tx=63&ty=42">Sumatra</a> in 1878 </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The corpse like smell given off by the flower is used to attract other insects (looking for carrion) for pollination</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The Arum even gives off heat (to the point of steaming) to make the perfume more attractive</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The plants outer leaves are called the <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&sa=N&biw=1600&bih=775&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbnid=Zd6aEgrEyHQ8fM:&imgrefurl=http://images.yourdictionary.com/spathe&docid=5VKekUPJ5FDdWM&imgurl=http://images.yourdictionary.com/images/science/ASspathe.jpg&w=265&h=371&ei=DLRLUu3UB4WtigKUvIHIBA&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:1,s:0,i:84&iact=rc&page=1&tbnh=190&tbnw=136&start=0&ndsp=38&tx=88&ty=91">spathe</a> and the tubular structure in the middle is called the <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&sa=N&biw=1600&bih=775&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbnid=KXoEZF73mnDomM:&imgrefurl=http://www.answers.com/topic/spathe&docid=Zj5v_n6u9gyAYM&imgurl=http://content.answcdn.com/main/content/img/Gardeners/f0239.jpg&w=289&h=406&ei=DLRLUu3UB4WtigKUvIHIBA&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:0,s:0,i:81&iact=rc&page=1&tbnh=191&tbnw=136&start=0&ndsp=38&tx=82&ty=88">spadix</a> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The Titan Arum holds male and female flowers which can be found at the bottom of the spadix being protected by the spathe</span><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Once the spathe has unfolded away from the spadix the female flowers are ready to be pollinated </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The spadix then begins to give off its heat and perfume which attracts the insects. Once inside the smooth walls of the spathe the insects cannot leave and are trapped. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Then the male flowers give off their pollen which attach to the trapped insects. Then the spathe begins to wither (takes 2 days or so) which allows the insects to escape and pollinate.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Eventually the peddles from the spathe collapse and twist around the base of the spadix protecting the developing fruit. Once the fruit is ripe the peddles rot away exposing the bright orange fruit to birds and other animals to be eaten, and as a result dispersed. </span></li>

<li><span style="font-size: large;">The Superb Lyrebird gets its name from an ancient Greek musical instrument called a <a href="http://www.aasd.k12.wi.us/Staff/loritzamy/Student%20webpages/World%20Hour%202/Pictures/lyre1binner.jpg">lyre</a> (only males have these types of feathers). When dancing the lyrebird will pull its feathers over its whole body in a similar shape as one of these string instruments.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The tail can grow as long as 60 centimeters on a fully grown 8 year old male.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">They don't fly much and instead run on the floor looking for food with their long sharp beaks</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">At night they roost up in trees using their claws (four on each leg) for grip</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The Lyrebird will clear out a dirt platform where he will sing and dance in order to attract a female </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">After mating (often with more than one female) the female will make a nest typically low to the ground where she will lay one single egg. She will incubate the egg for about fifty days and take care of the chick until it is mature enough to leave the nest. </span></li>

</div>
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">In the 1930's a flute player played songs for his lyrebird pet. Naturally the lyrebird was able to mimic the songs. In 1969 a park ranger (Neville Fenton) recorded the lyrebird singing two popular songs in the 1930's: "The Kell Row" and "Mosquito's Dance".</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The lyrebird can also be found on Australasia's 10 cent coin</span></li>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Key Characteristics:</b> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Gets its name because its main food source are ants and it's like a "lion" among ants</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Isn't very particular about the soil it uses for digging as long as it is composed of small, dry, and loose particles</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Most North American species are about 1.5 cm (0.6 in.) long in their fully developed larval stage</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Adults are about 4 cm (1.5 in.) long with a 8 cm (3.2 in.) wingspan</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The larvae is covered in small bristles that face forward so as to not interfere when it is digging its pit backwards</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Sickle-like jaws are hollow that can pierce their prey and inject venom</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">The ant lion pummels its prey with sand to prevent it from escaping but at the same time causes the walls of the pit to collapse in a land slide. The ant lion is stalling for time, waiting to strike it's exhausted victim. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Adult ant lions are nocturnal and don't live very long. Their main purpose is to mate at this stage in their life.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Ant lions can live up to 3 years in their larval stage</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Diet:</b></span></div>
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Larvae mostly eat ants but will eat anything small enough it can catch including spiders</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Some adults also eat small insects but others only eat pollen and nectar</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Habitat/Geography:</b></span></div>
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Found around the whole world with about 2,000 different species</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Found in warm and dry environments mostly to avoid rain. </span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Fun Fact:</b></span></div>
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Ant lions are also called "doodle bugs" because they leave twisty and curve shaped trails in the soil (like </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Antlion_doodles.jpg"><span style="font-size: large;">this</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">) </span></li>

<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>Key Characteristics:</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Name comes from their grainy skin texture </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Color can vary but typically lower eyelids are dark with yellow irises </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Newt skin colors can range from dark grey to reddish-brown</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Males are larger than females</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">During mating season males develop smooth, spongy skin which also becomes lighter colored </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The newt has very few predators and the garter snake is the only regular predator known </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The newt is randomly eaten by inexperienced animals to the newt like bull frogs, fish, even ducks but only certain kinds of trout and black bass actually survive the digestion</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Touching the newts does not seem to effect humans directly (except for some cases of skin irritation) but rubbing the toxins in eyes for example could be very painful</span></li>
</ul>
